Passing shadows
Ruth Kersley Greisman AMGP
Acid etched painted antique glass layered with float glass "Man is like unto a breath His days are as a shadow that passeth away" The "Aboth" (Rabbis of the Roman era) referred to this moving passage read during Jewish memorial services: "Would that life were like the shadow cast by a tree but it is like the shadow of a bird in flight". Layers of glass suggest transparent tree bands, deeply etched the passing shadows. A background in sculpture prior to studying stained glass remains a strong influence in the way I etch and layer glass. I respond to the forgotten and the commonplace, whether a memory, a fragment of writing or musical phrase. A detail which has been overlooked I elevate and award its own memorial.
