Mel Howse Associate

Mel Howse's work in glass has sought to embrace a wide audience. Her vitreous art installations ranging from schools and places of worship, to hospitals, livery companies and a Sainsbury's superstore, have explored all kinds of briefs in an adventurous and progressive way. Whether allied to new building design or ancient architecture, she has crossed the boundaries of both historical glazing techniques and emerging glass technology – often teaming the two.

As a designer and a maker she nurtures the continuity of a commission from design concept through to installation. The personal brief of each commission provides the diversity within her portfolio and gives each commission its own unique creative fingerprint. Working with architects forms part of the equation to bring pieces to the public. Whether the brief is to bring symbolism, to convey a message of faith, to create atmosphere and animation for new architectural spaces or to transform existing ones, the work aims to stir the imagination and your senses.

Mel is an Associate member of the BSMGP, a member of Chichester Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches, a full-time practising artist and a Queen’s Scholar.
